LNIPE was established in August 1957 as Lakshmibai College of Physical Education (LCPE) by the Ministry of Education & Culture, Government of India, in the centenary year of the First War of Independence. Situated in Gwalior, where Rani Lakshmibai made her valiant stand in 1857, the Institute was founded under the visionary leadership of Padma Shri Dr. P.M. Joseph.
Initially affiliated with Vikram University, Ujjain, and later with Jiwaji University, Gwalior (1964), the Institute was designated a nationally significant institution and renamed Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE) in 1973. Recognizing its unique contributions to physical education and sports, the Government of India granted it autonomous status under Jiwaji University in 1982.
In 1995, in acknowledgment of its pioneering contributions, LNCPE was conferred Deemed to be University status under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
